Issue with notes in titles after chapter

Cyrille
Hi,
I need some help if it is possible. Im' adding the notes of the KonNYM
in the text of the bible.  But if I have a note in the title just after
the chapter (using usfm markers), ex:
\c 1
\s1 Sambu na lukwikilu na yandi, Abraham gulukaka\f + 4,1-8 Paul ke
Mpila yina, kuguluka (to «kukituka unkwa masonga na
meso ya Nzambi»), yo kele kabu ya ke kwendila ti ndolula ya masumu:
yina yonso ke kwisila beto ofele. Yo ke kitula muntu «unkwa kiese» (tala
na vv. 7-8 mutindu bo ke yibukisa Nkeb 31 (He 32, 1-2a).\f*
\v 1
I can't display the note in xiphos. I need to move it in the first
verse. Like that:
\v 1 Nki beto\f + 4,1-8 Paul ke yibukisa Luy 15, 6: Nzambi kitulaka
Abraham muntu ya masonga sambu yandi kwikilaka ntangu Nzambi silaka
yandi nde: «Nge ta kituka tata ya mwana mosi ye nkâka ya bantekolo
Nki yandi
zwaka na kimuntu na yandi ?
\v 2 Kana...

And I have a lot of notes in this places, just after the chapter.

Best regards, Br Cyrille

Re: Issue with notes in titles after chapter

David Haslam
OSIS certainly allows note elements within a title element.  SWORD/JSword should support them.

Rather than posting the USFM snippets, it would be helpful to post the OSIS snippet for the title containing the note which Xiphos allegedly fails to display.

Aside:

The reported problem set me thinking in connection with the KJV work that I & DM Smith have done...

For the unreleased (work in progress towards the next iteration of the) KJV module, two book titles contain a note. These are found in Job and Psalms.

Xiphos 4.0.5 (Windows) displays spurious content in the preview pane for both these notes.

This is not something that either I or DM had noticed before.

For the book of Job, the XML reads:

<div canonical="true" type="book" osisID="Job">
<title type="main"><note type="study"><hi type="italic">Moses</hi> is thought to have wrote The Book of Job, whilst among the <hi type="italic">Madianites</hi>, Before Christ <abbr expansion="circa">cir</abbr> 1520</note>The Book of <hi type="spaced-letters">JOB</hi>.</title>

When the note tag is selected, in the preview pane under Footnote, I see "CHAP. X.".

For the book of Psalms, the XML reads:

<div canonical="true" type="book" osisID="Ps">
<title type="main">The Book of <hi type="spaced-letters">PSALMS</hi><note type="study">Luke 20.42 Acts 1 20.</note>.</title>

When the note tag is selected, in the preview pane under Footnote, I see "CHAP. XLII.".

Both these observations are anomalous.

I think we need help from Karl to better understand what's causing the symptoms.

However, in the same version of the KJV XML, one of the revisionDesc list items states:

<item>Moved 47 notes from Psalms verse 1 to the canonical title element.</item>

Here's one such example:

A canonical Psalm title containing two notes.

<chapter osisID="Ps.6">
<title type="chapter"><abbr expansion="Psalm"><hi type="spaced-letters">PSAL</hi>.</abbr> VI.</title>
<title canonical="true" type="psalm" osisID="Ps.6.1!title"><w lemma="strong:H05329" morph="strongMorph:TH8764">To the chief Musician</w> <w lemma="strong:H05058">on Neginoth</w> <w lemma="strong:H08067">upon Sheminith</w>, <w lemma="strong:H04210">A Psalm</w> <w lemma="strong:H01732">of David</w>.<note type="study"><catchWord>chief…</catchWord>: or, <rdg type="alternate">overseer</rdg>.</note><note type="study"><catchWord>Sheminith</catchWord>: or, <rdg type="alternate">the eighth</rdg>.</note></title>

This displays correctly in Xiphos. So it should be feasible to achieve Cyrille's objective.

Best regards,

David

I tested with andBible on Android and I can't read the note in the title
after the chapter. The number of the note (in Xiphos or AndBible
appears) but not the text of it.

If I were looking for a solution, I'd try using the \p tag.  I suspect USFM->OSIS step has limited logic for USFM that doesn't include paragraph tags.

That is, include paragraph tags prior to each verse

\p
\v 1

For every verse in every book.  This can be accomplished with a simple search replace in most editors (but likely not bibledit, nor paratext.)  You should be able to test it pretty quickly.

I've read this thread only lightly, but the bottom line is that Xiphos extracts all footnote/xref/strongs/morph content the same way, from the embedded content in the URL as returned by renderText() during chapter display, generally the "value=..." element.  If it's wrong, it's because the engine didn't deliver it right in the 1st place. Xiphos forms no opinion about what it should be, it just takes the value blindly.

That was a bizarre suggestion and without any merit. Sorry. Michael, I removed all spurious \p tags prior using textual submitted.

FWIW, if you want to test the engine while knowing exactly what went in, use a non compressed module created directly from OSIS as you can see the text, including all but the verse tags in the module files, in this way knowing that no intermediate tools have caused grief.

Re: Issue with notes in titles after chapter

Troy A. Griffitts
I didn't clearly state well how SWORD supports verse suffixes. SWORD will drop the suffix and reference the entire numbered entry. As DM has pointed out and Br. Cyrille has reported, on import this appends all verses with suffixes into the number verse entry. And when SWORD parses a verse reference with a suffix, it will take the reader to the entire verse. Maybe you missed my comment that said a module can choose to format markings of these subsection divisions however they want. For example, they can place notes in the text where they start, or simply a literal (1a) (1b) (1c) in the text, or whatever they choose. These marks are for the human reader only; SWORD does not treat these as separate verses. It's a partial support for verse suffixes that is not perfect but does allow some functionality.

Hope this helps,

Troy
